Description: Teaching to mastery is one of the key prerequisites to student achievement, but it is seldom accomplished. Impediments to teaching to mastery through conceptual understanding include: teacher knowledge of the content, teacher- centered instruction, lack of opportunity for students to engage in conversations about the content, and myopic assessment practices. This workshop will aid teachers and school leaders in the process of combining an instructional focus on product (getting the answer correct) with a focus on background knowledge and process (deep understanding of principles and ideas).
